Tongwynlais is a lovely village :)
We took a train to Cardiff after our stay in London. We had already been once up to Snowdonia (and loved it) but wanted to see some things down in the South of Wales as well.
Cardiff is small but lively - it has a gigantic shopping mall for the size of the city, holy cow. But really, we wanted to go roaming and decided that this trip would be our first foray into renting a car... and driving on the wrong side of the road :P
But before we could pick up the rental car, we had some time (they were delayed) and so we took the bus to Tongwynlais and walked to this place.
Castell Coch and yeah, I have no idea how you say it. I heard one local sound kind of like "Kirk" anyway...
The man who built it wanted it to look like a Fairy Tale Castle -- and it sure does. It's recent, completed in the 19th century but it's built on legit 13th century foundations. There was a castle here. Designed by William Burges, it's considered High Gothic Revival. Which sort of amuses me to no end, I mean... really? They need to name the style of a guy designing an idealised Castle? Cracks me up. But whatever floats your boat.
In any event, it's a spectacular hour to spend in the morning.
