Blair Castle, seat of the Dukes of Atholl
This castle is nestled right in the middle of the village of Blair Atholl, in Glen Garry. I was not able to take any photographs of the interior - they would much rather you purchase the book. It wasn't very grand, truth be told. It was a home, despite how marvelous it looks on the outside. It did have some magnificent artifacts inside. If you love Scottish history, this is definitely a place to see.
This Castle is pretty steeped in history and has had some extremely famous visitors. Oliver Cromwell stayed here, the Duke at the time a Royalist. Bonny Prince Charlie was quartered here twice during the Rising. Then they made the terrible mistake of leaving it, only to have it taken up by English sympathizers and then they laid siege to Blair Castle until they were near starvation, right before the tragic end at Culloden. It's really rather sad.
Queen Victoria stayed here in 1844 - directly after her stay she gave permission to the Duke for the Atholl Highlanders. We unfortunately missed their yearly display here at Blair Castle by just a couple of weeks!
