The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Yes, of course I went and saw The Hobbit midnight showing last night. Well worth the wait. We were first in line for the 3D IMAX showing at our local theater.
I figured some people might be curious about my take on it, so I thought I'd make a quick and spoiler free review.
It's worth seeing, absolutely. But there are many many thematic changes, be aware if you're a purist. I am a purist at heart, completely. I like to stick with Canon because I absolutely respect the author/creator's view and ideas. I think messing with them is a form of disrespect and I don't really look kindly on it.
Having said that, I understand why they did what they did. They made a movie and not an exact replication of the book. I mean, if I want the book I'll read the book.
I will say this - I found myself just marking time when the sweeping changes were on the screen, just waiting for the next perfectly adapted tidbit that was straight from the book.
They did get some salient parts exactly right, and that is why I will always forgive Peter Jackson for screwing around with perfection. The key scenes are done with care and for that, this is worth seeing.
I reserve judgement on the next two films til I see them.
