In 2009, Michael returned to the world of The Dark Tower in this painting created especially for the amazing coffee table book KNOWING DARKNESS: ARTISTS INSPIRED BY STEPHEN KING.

This technically isn't a contractual piece, he himself calls it Fan Art :)  But it's not one of his personal visions, being that it's King's world we're looking at.  But this is one of my favorites all the same for a variety of reasons.  Whelan's technical ability is so outstanding that being able to bring us to different worlds, of his imagining or of others, is what truly sets him apart.

Also, The Dark Tower series by King is truly a masterpiece and epic in scale only eclipsed by the likes of Tolkien and Tad Williams (imo).  But he's earned his place in the pantheon.  World building is harder than just one-offing a single volume - likely why so few authors attempt it.
Or manage it well.  But despite the critics haranguing him endlessly for whatever reason they invent, King pursues what he wants - and I for one am grateful for it.

I'm so glad Michael Whelan is as well :)
