Gone Girl - thoughts
Well this one was late in coming - usually I see hyped movies in the first couple of weeks they are out but I've been slack! I am glad I rented this, though. It was worth the 4 and change in iTunes.
That isn't quite all I have to say about it, though. I liked it. It was brutal and quiet. Good combo that isn't done enough. Too slick, though and there was one gaping, huge problem for me but it was necessary for the story. It's too bad the writer didn't think it a bit through more and make it more clever.
I should say I went into the film knowing what happened -- I couldn't quite keep internet dark months after the film released ;) And while that made the beginning of the film kind of boring, I did *not* know what happened after the point of the big reveal and so that was good. And yet I was not excited about the end. Because of course it was trying so hard to be 'different' that it just made me groan.
A lot of this movie was trying too hard. But, that being said I still liked it.
I would just like to add that the Social Justice people who either think this film is mega-feminist (umm, if you think so you're an *idiot*) or that it's super /lovethepatriarchy because of a wild-ass fantasy showing just how crazy women really are (italics for sarcasm) you need special care. It's neither of those things so get your goddamn heads out of your asses.
It's just a story. A woman happens to be the fucking villain. Who cares. We used to love those kinds of movies and not get so incensed. Basic Instinct anyone? Oh yeah, you young people don't even know what that movie is.
If this is what being "old" is, then I'll take it any day.
