Macbeth - Fassbender and Cotillard; Perfection
I just finished this. I had to wait for it to be released on BluRay because it never showed at any Theater here in Charlotte. Such a pity. We did see it as properly as possible - surround sound and a big LED screen, but it isn't the same.
But it didn't detract from the perfection of this film. I loved in every way possible. Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare. More cerebral, less soap opera. Devastatingly more tragic than any other play and yet, cathartic; because they get what they deserve and they know it. The wallowing in glorious guilt is transporting. It's a spotlight on harrowing consequences for actions derived in lust for power.
The DoP, Adam Arkapaw, is glorious and his work in this totally sublime. It was beautiful to behold and everything about the interpretation added to the bleakness of the story.
And I don't even want to begin with how wonderful the performances were. In a word, mesmerizing. I have goosebumps just recalling the un-cut shots of each solo monologue.
It is really just that good and perfect. If you love some beautiful and brutal Shakespeare, there is no better.
