Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in travel, but also discuss history, folklore and films and books. Hope you have a nice stay!

Mr. Robot - a TV show in case you never saw Fight Club

Mr. Robot - a TV show in case you never saw Fight Club

Let me just say that yes, this show is cool and hip because it shows correct hacking.  Finally.  The lingo is smooth and integrated.  Yay!

Rami Malik is also a gem.  He really is, he absolutely carries the show in every way possible.  And we all are aware of the magnetism of Christian Slater.

But all that being said there are some glaring flaws.  First, it's a shadow of Fight Club.  I feel like it was almost a rip-off.  Not to put too fine a point on it, it's nearly the same story.  The end result and purpose of the entire show is the same exact thing, wiping the debt.  It's a bit meh.  Seen it.  There are other doppelgangers of the film as well, some *exactly* the same that I wonder the screenwriter isn't irked a little bit.  But whatever.

Second, the way the show portrays corporate intrigue is *cringe worthy* in the extreme.  Tyrell?  FOR REAL? I laugh every time he and his psycho wife are on screen.  There is no way in hell any of that would ever happen, ever.  Full.  Fucking. Stop.

No one behaves that way, even at the top echelons of corporate structure.  You don't get jobs by glad-handing.  Believe it or not, you get them based on skill and experience.  Just like any other job. The movies and TV show perpetuate this ridiculousness and it's just a bald-faced lie and seeing it so overtly trampled on Mr. Robot is actually galling.

Sorry to break it to everyone, but if you don't have dinner parties, no one actually cares.

This isn't 17th century Versailles.  People keep wishing it was and trying to make it so.  Perhaps in more provincial towns and smaller cities where people have issues with their own egos, and small business owners have themselves watched too many movies, they try and make it that way in their own little corner of the world.

But in Fortune 100 companies, yeah, no.  Just no.  Stop it, Mr. Robot - because it's ironic as hell that you make the hacking accurate and then just laughably fuck up so hard on the corporate intrigue side.

I completely understand that it would be a more boring show if they made it all as boring as it really was in the real world.  But it's just so over-the-top.  They should dial it back.  Especially that wife.  LOL She is just hilarious!

So Mr. Robot was alright.  If you have seen Fight Club then you've seen the entire first season already.  Watch it if you're curious about how a TV SHOULD show hacking.  Watch it if you enjoy good acting by a lead (the supporting cast is forgettable).  But over all it's not the second coming at all.
