Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in travel, but also discuss history, folklore and films and books. Hope you have a nice stay!

West Kennet Long Barrow; The Barrow Downs

West Kennet Long Barrow; The Barrow Downs

West Kennet Long Barrow, Wiltshire.

I had the ridiculous luck that day to be completely alone while I explored here. It's just on a hill in Wiltshire. There are farms all around. No pomp. No fences. Just sitting there.

It's almost six thousand years old.

You can go inside, they've cleared it out of the skeletons well over a hundred years ago. Word is the man who excavated them used their bones in strange alchemical mixtures. It was in 1836.

But all I kept thinking about was The Barrow Downs in The Lord of the Rings. I was there. I wish it was a foggy morning, and I had trodden out of an ancient copse of trees and come upon this in the mist... alas, it was a beautiful sunny day full of wind and birdsong. It made it no less mysterious and wonderful.

Similar to the morning I first saw and explored Stonehenge, something passed over in me that day. I changed and I'm so grateful down to the very core of my being that I was allowed to have this experience that day.
